What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine combines modern, evidence-informed healthcare with traditional approaches to natural medicine. Symptoms are viewed as indicators of underlying imbalances and help guide the assessment process as we work to identify the root cause of health concerns. Rather than focusing solely on managing symptoms, naturopathic medicine supports the body’s innate ability to heal and maintain balance to create a foundation for long-term health and wellness.

A naturopathic visit involves a comprehensive health assessment, including a detailed medical history, physical examinations, and laboratory testing when appropriate. This thorough evaluation allows our naturopathic doctor to develop individualized treatment plans for each patient's unique needs and health goals.

Treatments may include a combination of lifestyle and nutritional counselling, botanical (herbal) medicine, acupuncture, supplementation, pharmaceuticals, and other integrated therapeutic approaches. Our naturopathic doctor works collaboratively with patients to empower them with the knowledge and tools needed to take an active role in their health, with an emphasis on disease prevention, optimizing overall wellness, and supporting long-term health outcomes.

FAQs

Many extended health insurance plans provide coverage for naturopathic services. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm the details of your specific plan.

Q: Does MSP cover Naturopathic services?
A:
At this time in British Columbia, naturopathic services are not covered under MSP and are considered private healthcare services.

Q: Who can book a virtual appointment?

A:  â€‹Virtual appointments are available for B.C. residents only.

Q: How does an ND differ from an MD?

A:  â€‹

  • Appointment length: An initial visit with an ND is typically 50 minutes, allowing time for a comprehensive discussion of health history, current concerns, and patient goals.

  • Approach to care: NDs place emphasis on preventative care, as prevention is one of the six core principles of naturopathic medicine, with a focus on supporting long-term health and wellness.

  • Treatment approach: Naturopathic treatments use a variety of evidence-informed therapies, starting with the most appropriate and least invasive option for the individual. Treatment plans may include lifestyle counselling, nutrition, botanical medicine, supplementation, IV/IM therapy, and pharmaceuticals when indicated.

NDs work alongside MDs and other healthcare providers to support coordinated, comprehensive patient care.
